Transponder Keys

Hosse and Hosse Transponder Key brochureWe are certified to make transponder key copies for most cars and can save you 40% or more on your duplicate key. All you'll need to do is make one easy visit to our shop. Making a duplicate transponder key is not usually done by most hardware stores because of the need to program the chip car key.

What is a Transponder Key?

Transponder keys (also called "chip keys") are car ignition keys with a microchip built inside the plastic head that send a signal to the engine. If the code is incorrect, the engine will not start. This is true even if a key copy was cut exactly like the original.

Transponder keysMany people who have them are not aware of the fact because the chip is hidden inside the plastic head of the key.

Most cars today use a transponder key, something that reduces the chance of theft, but that increases the difficulty in getting duplicate keys. In order to reproduce this key you would normally have to purchase a blank key from the car dealer, take it to a locksmith to be duplicated, then take it back to the dealer with your car to have it programmed, each stage costing you money and time. At Hosse & Hosse, we can do this process in one step, while you wait, saving you about 40% of what you would be charged by the dealer.

A transponder key blank, if cut correctly, can crank a car. But if it hasn't been programmed, the car won’t recognize the serial number that is being transmitted within its set of confirmed and correct numbers - and the car won't start.

When buying a vehicle that includes these types of keys, it's a good idea to make sure you have at least two keys. Sometimes keys are lost, so having a second valid, programmed transponder key is important.

We Can Save You 40% on Your Key Copy

Although transponder keys have reduced car thefts, they are unfortunately more expensive than a standard key to duplicate. If you go to a dealership, it can easily take several days and several hundred dollars to get a copy made because of the need for transponder key programming.

Don’t get caught with only one car key. Get yourself a spare key before it is too late.
